Her father, a rich American, died when she was a child, leaving her mother, Clara, to bring up the three children, Agatha, Madge, and Monty. Agatha retained an affection for Ashfield all her life, and one of her last novels, Postern of Fate (1972), is set there, and is a tribute to Agatha’s happy childhood.
